Where Spirit and History Embrace: The Sacred Soul of Reggio Calabria

In the vibrant heart of Reggio Calabria rises the Basilica Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo. It is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, alongside the Riace Bronzes and the Italo Falcomatà seafront. More than just a church, the Cathedral stands as a cultural and spiritual anchor for the local community.

Designed by Father Carmelo Angiolini, the structure showcases a neo-Romanesque style with unique variations. These distinctive elements make it one of a kind in Italy. At its entrance, two statues—St. Paul and Saint Stephen of Nicea—welcome visitors with solemn majesty. Both were sculpted by Francesco Jerace in 1934.

Moreover, the Cathedral holds a deep bond with the city’s Marian devotion. Each year, starting from the second Saturday in September, the Madonna della Consolazione descends from the Basilica dell’Eremo. She remains in the Cathedral until the last Sunday of November. This tradition, centered around a painting from 1547 by Nicolò Andrea Capriolo, is a powerful symbol of hope and comfort for the people of Reggio.

The Cathedral’s story is marked by destruction and rebirth. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt several times—after Saracen raids, Turkish attacks, and two devastating earthquakes in 1783 and 1908. However, its resilience reflects the enduring faith of the community.

Today, it stands as the largest sacred building in Calabria—94 meters long, 22 meters wide, and 21 meters high. In 1978, Pope Paul VI declared it a Minor Basilica, recognizing its historical and spiritual importance.

Finally, legend adds a touch of mystery: it is said that Saint Paul once ignited a marble column with divine fire. This miraculous tale still echoes within the Cathedral walls.
