Ionian Coast & Beaches
The Ionian Coast Reggio Calabria, also called the Costa dei Gelsomini (Jasmine Coast), is one of Southern Italy’s most unspoiled seaside destinations. It stretches between Capo Spartivento and Punta Stilo, offering crystal-clear waters, wide sandy beaches, and untouched Mediterranean landscapes.
Moreover, the coast is a protected nesting area for the endangered Caretta caretta. Every summer, these sea turtles return after long ocean migrations. Visitors can enjoy peaceful free beaches and rolling dunes. In addition, the striking Ionian badlands, made of clay and marl, create dramatic scenery along the shore.
Culturally, the area is equally rich. Grecanic communities around Bova and Bova Marina preserve ancient Greek-Calabrian traditions, language, and gastronomy in the historic region of Bovesìa. Further north, the heart of Locride centers on Locri, once the powerful Magna Graecia city of Locri Epizefiri.
The coastline also features well-known destinations like Riace Marina, famous for the discovery of the Bronzi di Riace in the 1970s.
Overall, the Ionian Coast of Reggio Calabria offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and beautiful beaches. Therefore, it is perfect for nature lovers, cultural travelers, and beach seekers alike.
