The Feast of Our Lady of Consolation: Faith, Time, and Devotion

The Feast of Our Lady of Consolation, also known as the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione, is the most deeply felt religious event in Reggio Calabria. Every year, it takes place on the second Saturday of September and continues for four intense days. During this time, the city becomes a space of shared devotion and participation. Although Saint George is the official patron saint, the Madonna della Consolazione holds a special role. In fact, she is recognized as the true spiritual protector of the city. For this reason, the faithful call her “our advocate” and turn to her with prayers and vows. Moreover, the feast belongs to the wider tradition of Marian feasts in Southern Italy. Pilgrims arrive from Calabria and Sicily, filling streets and churches. As a result, religious life extends beyond the churches. Day and night, devotion becomes a collective experience that strengthens community bonds.

The Procession and the Vara: The Emotional Core of the Feast

The most intense moment of the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation takes place on Tuesday. On this day, the sacred image of the Madonna is carried through the city in a solemn procession. The painting was created in 1547 by the Reggio Calabria artist Nicolò Andrea Capriolo. The artwork rests on the Vara, a monumental structure five meters high and weighing more than twelve quintals. It departs from the Sanctuary of the Eremo and travels over three kilometers to the Cathedral. Along the way, the portatori della Vara carry the heavy structure on their shoulders. Finally, the most emotional moment arrives. During the “volata,” the bearers run the last stretch toward the Duomo. This powerful gesture symbolizes sacrifice, trust, and faith. Therefore, the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione stands among the most intense Marian feasts in the Mediterranean.

The Sanctuary of the Eremo: Where the Feast Begins

The Sanctuary of the Eremo rises on the highest hill of Reggio Calabria. It marks the spiritual beginning of the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation. Founded in the 16th century by Archbishop Centelles, it was conceived as a place of prayer inspired by Franciscan values. However, the original structure was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1908. Later, it was carefully rebuilt, preserving its religious significance. Inside the sanctuary, the Vara of the Madonna della Consolazione is kept throughout the year. From this elevated site, the procession begins its descent toward the city. Symbolically, faith moves from above toward the people. In addition, the sanctuary offers wide views over the Strait of Messina. Because of this, it remains both a spiritual and visual landmark within the Marian feasts of Southern Italy.

The Duomo of Reggio Calabria: Arrival, Renewal, and Collective Memory

The final destination of the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation is the Duomo of Reggio Calabria. Officially dedicated to the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven, it stands in the historic center of the city. After the earthquake of 1908, the cathedral was rebuilt using modern anti-seismic techniques. As a result, it became a symbol of resilience and rebirth. When the Vara reaches Piazza Duomo, thousands of faithful gather in silence and prayer. Elevated to Minor Basilica status in 1978, the cathedral plays a central role during Marian feasts. Here, faith, history, and urban life meet. Therefore, the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione concludes in a place where memory and devotion continue to shape the identity of Reggio Calabria.
