An eternal tribute to a man who rebuilt hope from the ruins of Reggio Calabria

A Symbol of Civic Pride and Cultural Renewal in the Heart of Reggio Calabria

Located in the heart of Piazza De Nava, just steps from the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia, the Monument to Giuseppe De Nava is far more than a statue. It stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, cultural identity, and public gratitude.

The monument honors Giuseppe De Nava (1857–1924), a distinguished statesman and native of Reggio Calabria. He played a key role in rebuilding the city after the catastrophic earthquake of 1908. His vision and dedication to public service left a lasting legacy.

The statue was unveiled in 1936 and sculpted by Francesco Jerace, one of Calabria’s most respected artists. It depicts De Nava in a confident stance, his gaze turned forward and one arm reaching outward. This pose reflects determination and purpose.

Below the statue, a richly decorated marble pedestal features bas-reliefs that show scenes of labor and reconstruction. In fact, these carvings celebrate the efforts and sacrifices made to restore the city. Moreover, two historic coats of arms—the Cross of Saint George and the twin crosses of the Calabrias—highlight Reggio’s civic pride.

On either side of the monument, two fountains add elegance and symbolism. Water flows from the faces of sculpted female figures into large shell-shaped basins. As a result, the monument expresses not only remembrance, but renewal.

Today, Piazza De Nava is a lively public space. Its location near the Bronzi di Riace, the bustling Corso Garibaldi, and the scenic Lungomare Falcomatà makes it an ideal destination for culture lovers and curious travelers alike.
