Where futuristic architecture meets the soul of Calabria
A Civic and Cultural Landmark: The Beating Heart of Reggio Calabria’s Identity
Rising in the northeast of Reggio Calabria’s historic center, Palazzo Tommaso Campanella is more than a government building. It’s a bold statement of innovation and identity. Named after the Calabrian philosopher Tommaso Campanella, this structure is the official seat of the Regional Council of Calabria.
Locals call it “The Spaceship” for good reason. Its futuristic design features connected blocks linked by sleek metal walkways. At its core lies the Agora, a central open-air square where the Council Chamber stands. This space symbolizes dialogue, democracy, and civic life.
However, Palazzo Campanella is not just political. It also serves as a dynamic cultural hub. Inside, you’ll find the Francesco Fortugno Council Hall, as well as conference rooms named after Nicholas Green and Giuditta Levato. These venues host meetings, lectures, and public events. Furthermore, the Sala Federica Monteleone is home to graduation ceremonies in law, while the Nicola Calipari Auditorium adds a touch of modern elegance to every event.
A major highlight is the large public library. Open for consultation, it often hosts exhibitions and cultural gatherings that reflect the region’s artistic vitality. Moreover, many of the halls are decorated with contemporary artworks by local artists.
Hidden inside the complex is a true urban oasis: the Palmarium. Curated by agronomist Francesco Tassone, this lush garden features rare and exotic palms. It’s a peaceful spot—perfect for a quiet walk or reflective pause in the heart of the city.
Finally, from 2009 to 2013, the building even housed the Riace Bronzes during their delicate restoration. That chapter added another layer of historical prestige to this extraordinary place.
