A Botanical Jewel in the Heart of Reggio’s Urban Landscape

The Palmarium is a botanical oasis nestled beside Palazzo Tommaso Campanella in Reggio Calabria. Covering more than 3,000 square meters, it offers visitors a unique journey through the world of exotic palms. This garden is not only a peaceful escape but also a tribute to biodiversity and landscape design.

Since its opening in 2009, the Palmarium has hosted rare and majestic plant species. Some of these come from Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Florida. One highlight is the Butiagrus nabbonnanda, a rare hybrid palm that is unique in Europe. In fact, due to current regulations, many of these species can no longer be imported, which makes the garden even more valuable.

As you stroll along the Lazzaro stone pathway, recently restored for easy access, you’ll encounter over 24 plant varieties. A graceful gazebo offers moments of rest, while a bronze Renaissance-style fountain, “Nude with Dove”, by local artist Michele Di Raco, adds a touch of timeless beauty.

Unlike trees, palms are ancient monocots with distinct features. They grow tall but not wide, lack branches, and shed leaves only with age. These qualities make them more resistant to wind and even hurricanes. Therefore, walking through the Palmarium feels like discovering a forest of giant grasses rather than trees.

You’ll also find familiar species, such as the Mediterranean dwarf palm, alongside more exotic ones like the Grugru palm with its spiked trunk or the Blue palm of Mexico. Each has a story, a texture, and a presence that connects Reggio with tropical worlds beyond.
