Bronze bust of Mino Reitano holding a violin in Piazza Mino Reitano, Reggio Calabria

Piazza Mino Reitano (Piazzale della Libertà) Reggio Calabria

Piazza Mino Reitano stands today as a vivid symbol of Reggio Calabria’s evolving identity, blending history, culture, and community spirit. Once known as Piazzale della Libertà, this spacious square marked the northern edge of the city along the Annunziata torrent. Over time, it changed purpose many times — first as a busy bus terminal, then as a parking area — reflecting the city’s practical needs.

However, in 2015, a new vision began to take shape. Under the leadership of Mayor Falcomatà, the square underwent a major urban renewal project. At its heart now lies a graceful roundabout crowned by a refreshing fountain. Its gentle sprays offer welcome relief during the long, sunlit Calabrian summers. As a result, the area has become a lively and inviting space, where locals and travelers alike pause to enjoy its calm beauty.

Moreover, in 2011, before the renewal, the city’s toponymy commission renamed the square to honor Mino Reitano — a beloved singer born in nearby Fiumara di Muro. The decision came after many heartfelt requests from residents who wished to celebrate one of Reggio’s most cherished musical icons. Nearly two decades earlier, Reitano had performed an unforgettable concert right here, attracting an astonishing crowd of about 100,000 people. That night sealed his place in the collective memory of the city.

At the center of the square, a striking bronze bust by sculptor Rosario La Seta captures Reitano holding his beloved violin. The figure rises over two meters tall, set upon a block of Lazzaro stone engraved with a musical note. This monument, finally, stands as a timeless tribute to the passion and artistic soul of a man who once opened for the Beatles at Hamburg’s legendary Cavern Club in 1962.
