Nestled between the Cathedral and the seafront promenade, Piazza Federico Genoese is a hidden treasure in Reggio Calabria’s historic center. This intimate square, embraced by tall palm trees and shaded benches, offers a moment of peace and a glimpse into Italy’s unification history.

Named after the nobleman and patriot Federico Genoese, the square holds deep symbolic value for the city. Genoese, born into an influential Salernitan family active in local politics, became one of the key figures in the 1847 uprising against Bourbon rule. Arrested and sentenced to death for his role, he is remembered as a local hero who gave his life to the cause of Italian unity.

But Genoese’s impact didn’t end with his sacrifice. In his will, he donated most of his wealth to Reggio Calabria, with one condition: it must be used for public benefit. Thanks to his bequest, the city built schools, kindergartens, and a modern aqueduct—projects that reshaped daily life for generations.

At the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Genoese, sculpted by Rocco Larussa, surrounded by greenery and thoughtfully placed benches. Fully restored in 2014, the square now offers an inviting space for visitors to pause, reflect, and enjoy the timeless charm of this historical nook.
