The elegance of Gothic grace overlooking Reggio Calabria
Where Faith Meets Architecture: The Beating Heart of Reggio’s Spiritual Skyline
Perched proudly atop the “Hill of Angels,” the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony of Padua stands as one of Reggio Calabria’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1934 and consecrated three years later, it represents a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture. The structure embodies both artistic refinement and deep spiritual devotion.
Its elegant façade, divided into three sections, features a radiant rose window at the center. On either side, two bell towers rise proudly, each crowned with wrought-iron crosses—symbols of faith and resilience.
Inside, the church follows a Latin cross plan that opens into three bright and airy naves. This sacred space invites visitors to pause, reflect, and admire its calm beauty. Moreover, the tomb of Canon Salvatore De Lorenzo, adorned with a bronze plaque sculpted by Francesco Triglia, adds historical depth to the sanctuary’s serene atmosphere. At the heart of the main altar, the marble shrine of Saint Anthony captures generations of devotion and can be reached through two graceful spiral staircases.
The sanctuary is also deeply connected to the legacy of Don Luigi Orione. After the devastating 1908 earthquake, he founded his charitable mission here—what later became The Little Work of Divine Providence. Today, this mission continues as an international beacon of hope for children in need.
Beyond its sacred role, the sanctuary serves as a lively cultural gathering place. Every June, during the Feast of Saint Anthony, its large courtyard and auditorium come alive with music, lights, and tradition. The celebration transforms faith into joy, filling the air with devotion and the vibrant rhythm of the Calabrian soul.
