The sacred heart of Reggio Calabria, where history, faith, and architecture converge.
A Square Full of Stories and Symbols
Nestled in the historic center of Reggio Calabria, Piazza Duomo is a symbolic and spiritual landmark. Its current structure dates back to the early 20th century, shaped by the aftermath of the devastating 1908 earthquake and the urban reorganization of 1911. The square, repositioned slightly south of its original location, was redesigned to reflect symmetry and elegance. The old cathedral, though not severely damaged, was demolished and rebuilt using original artistic elements—granting the space a sense of continuity between past and present.
Named after the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta, which majestically dominates the southeastern side of the square, Piazza Duomo was once known as “Tocco Grande.” Dating back to the 16th century, this name reflected the administrative practice of dividing the city into “Tocchi,” where important civic decisions—like the election of two city mayors representing the people and artisan classes—were made.
But this peaceful square was once a battlefield. On August 21, 1860, Piazza Duomo witnessed a decisive clash between Garibaldi’s Southern Army and Bourbon troops. This victory marked the fall of Reggio and its incorporation into the unifying Kingdom of Italy.
Today, Piazza Duomo is more than a historic site—it’s a cultural stage. Don’t miss Palazzo Laface on the north side, an Art Nouveau treasure. Typically closed to the public, it opens during FAI Spring Days, revealing exquisite marble interiors, wrought-iron staircases, and Liberty-style architectural details.
Just a few steps away, discover the Diocesan Museum of the Cathedral, accessible from Via Tommaso Campanella, which showcases sacred art and deepens the visitor’s understanding of the city’s spiritual roots.
