Where Liberty architecture meets civic memory in the heart of Reggio Calabria

A cultural landmark where history, art, and identity converge

In the vibrant heart of Reggio Calabria, nestled in the lively Piazza Camagna along the city’s historic Corso Garibaldi, the Monument to Biagio Camagna rises as a proud sentinel of civic virtue. More than a sculpture, this bronze figure tells a story—one deeply rooted in justice, courage, and local identity.

Designed by Domenico Pellegrino, a talented sculptor native to the region, the statue was unveiled in 1925, just one year after its completion. It captures a pivotal moment from June 3, 1919, when Camagna delivered a stirring courtroom defense in Naples on behalf of Reggio-born sailors wrongly accused. With an outstretched hand and determined gaze, the statue immortalizes the power of his words—words that not only cleared their names but also galvanized a sense of civic dignity.

Set on a double marble pedestal, the inscription “A Biagio Camagna: il Popolo” (“To Biagio Camagna: The People”) speaks volumes. It’s a simple phrase, yet it highlights the unbreakable bond between a man and his city. Originally placed in the square that now bears his name, the statue was moved in 1967 to Piazza Castello. However, its soul remained anchored to its birthplace. Thanks to the cultural association L’Agorà, it returned home in 2007, welcomed with heartfelt pride by the citizens.
