A timeless crossroad where Reggio Calabria opens its soul to the sea and the sky
Where Culture, Identity, and Scenery Embrace in the Heart of Reggio Calabria
In the heart of Reggio Calabria, Piazza Indipendenza stands as a vibrant hub of beauty, history, and daily life. Its location is ideal—just steps from the National Archaeological Museum and the Reggio Lido train station.
From here, Reggio’s essence radiates in every direction. You can walk along Lungomare Italo Falcomatà or Lungomare Giacomo Matteotti—locally known as Via Marina Alta and Via Marina Bassa. These tree-lined promenades offer one of the most spectacular coastal views in Europe. On clear days, Mount Etna appears like a distant sentinel beyond the strait.
Moreover, Piazza Indipendenza is a cultural stage. It frequently hosts open-air concerts and major events, especially during the summer. The most notable is the closing concert of the beloved Feste Mariane, a tradition that brings locals and visitors together in celebration.
Several key streets begin at the square. Viale Genovese Zerbi leads to the pinewood and ferry port. Via Saverio Vollaro takes you to the Church of the Candelora. Other streets connect to Corso Garibaldi, the city’s iconic avenue dedicated to Cristoforo Colombo.
At its center once stood a fountain. However, it was repeatedly rebuilt and never fully loved by the locals. Satirical poet Nicola Giunta even mocked it in verse. As a result, today the fountain has been replaced by a flowerbed. It now serves as a traffic roundabout and a symbolic welcome to the city.
