Arena dello Stretto

A breathtaking view over the Strait

Perched above the sea where the old Molo di Porto Salvo once stood, the Arena dello Stretto in Reggio Calabria blends modern architecture with ancient Greek inspiration. With its semicircular steps echoing classic amphitheaters, this open-air venue offers a spectacular panorama over the Strait of Messina and the Sicilian coastline. Built in the 20th century yet inspired by Magna Graecia, the Arena is a vibrant cultural hub during the summer season.

Named after Senator Ciccio Franco, the Arena hosts prestigious international and national events—from film screenings and fashion shows to open-air concerts and theater. Its standout feature is the marble monument at the edge of the sea: the Cippo Marmoreo. Created by sculptor Bonfiglio, it commemorates King Vittorio Emanuele III’s first royal visit to Reggio after his coronation. At its center rises a striking bronze statue of Athena Promachos, symbolizing protection over the city.

More than just a scenic spot, the Arena dello Stretto is an essential part of Reggio’s identity. Events like the Reggio Calabria Film Fest, the Mediterranean Treasures fashion gala, and the summer Solstice celebration of the Academy of Fine Arts transform it into a lively gathering place for locals and travelers alike. The combination of culture, history, and sea views makes every visit unforgettable.
