Icon of faith, rebirth, and devotion in the heart of Reggio Calabria
Where Spirit and History Embrace: The Sacred Soul of Reggio Calabria
In the vibrant heart of Reggio Calabria stands the Basilica Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo, one of the city’s most cherished landmarks. Alongside the Riace Bronzes and the Italo Falcomatà seafront, it embodies both the spiritual depth and cultural identity of the community. More than a church, it serves as a living testament to faith, resilience, and artistic beauty.
Designed by Father Carmelo Angiolini, the Cathedral displays a refined neo-Romanesque style enriched with unique variations that distinguish it across Italy. As you approach its entrance, two solemn statues—St. Paul and Saint Stephen of Nicea—greet visitors with quiet majesty. Sculptor Francesco Jerace created them in 1934, and ever since, they have stood as guardians of this sacred place.
Moreover, the Cathedral is deeply intertwined with Reggio’s Marian devotion. Every year, beginning on the second Saturday of September, the Madonna della Consolazione descends from the Basilica dell’Eremo to remain in the Cathedral until the last Sunday of November. This centuries-old tradition, centered on a 1547 painting by Nicolò Andrea Capriolo, continues to unite the city in prayer, hope, and gratitude.
Throughout its long history, the Cathedral has endured raids, attacks, and earthquakes. Despite the destruction of 1783 and 1908, the people of Reggio always rebuilt it, transforming loss into renewal. Today, it proudly stands as Calabria’s largest sacred building—94 meters long, 22 wide, and 21 high. In recognition of its profound spiritual and cultural role, Pope Paul VI elevated it to the rank of Minor Basilica in 1978.
Finally, legend adds a mystical touch: it is said that Saint Paul once set fire to a marble column with divine light. This miraculous tale still echoes among the Cathedral’s stone walls, reminding every visitor of the city’s enduring faith and wonder.
