A Sacred Landmark Reborn Through Time and Earthquakes

The Church of San Giuseppe al Corso stands proudly on Corso Garibaldi, between Via Palamolla and Via II Settembre. It is one of Reggio Calabria’s most beloved spiritual and cultural landmarks. Originally built in 1598, the church has faced the trials of history with remarkable strength. Twice destroyed—first by the earthquake of 1783 and again by the one in 1908—it rose each time from the ruins, much like the city itself. This enduring resilience reflects Reggio’s unbreakable spirit: proud, faithful, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Redesigned by the architect Rosario Pedace, the current structure embraces a refined interpretation of the moderate Gothic style. The façade welcomes visitors with a grand portal framed by two graceful niches and crowned by a luminous rose window. As sunlight filters through the stone tracery, it fills the interior with a serene radiance. This balance of shadow and light creates an atmosphere both solemn and comforting—an ideal place to pause, breathe, and reflect amid the energy of the historic center.

Inside, art and devotion meet in perfect harmony. The church houses a touching painting of Saint Philip Neri, known for his humility and joy, and an 1838 masterpiece by Brunetto Aloi portraying the Madonna di Portosalvo. This second artwork holds special meaning for the city. Once kept in the seaside church of Porto Salvo, it survived the 1908 earthquake and now finds safe haven here, preserving a piece of Reggio’s spiritual heart.
