The Church of Santa Lucia in Reggio Calabria is more than a sacred site. It stands as a living witness to centuries of devotion, resilience, and artistic excellence. Founded as a parish in 1629 by Archbishop Annibale D’Afflitto, it has shaped the city’s spiritual identity for almost four hundred years. Later, in 1798, the church was elevated to the rank of an urban parish, marking a new chapter in its long history. The current structure, completed in 1930 under the refined vision of Carmelite Father Cesare Umberto Angelini, perfectly blends Renaissance-inspired design with the vibrant pulse of modern Reggio Calabria. Located between Via XXV Luglio and Via De Nava, it welcomes visitors with a grand staircase that enhances its solemn beauty and symbolic elevation.

Inside, the church reveals an atmosphere both intimate and majestic. Its three naves open into a radiant space where sacred art speaks directly to the soul. At the high altar, Michele di Raco’s sculptural group—the Glorification of Saint Lucy—is framed by a stunning mosaic apse designed by Gisa D’Ortona. Together, they create a visual dialogue between sculpture and light, a true spiritual symphony. Nearby, an ancient wooden statue of Saint Lucy, surrounded by shimmering mosaics and detailed bas-reliefs, narrates her life and martyrdom with grace and depth.
