Church of Santa Maria della Cattolica dei Greci Reggio Calabria

The Church of Santa Maria della Cattolica dei Greci stands as one of Reggio Calabria’s most enduring symbols. It is an elegant neoclassical structure that still carries the ancient pulse of Byzantine Christianity. As the city’s earliest Christian institution and former Greek-rite cathedral, it represents a rare continuity of faith, culture, and resilience. Moreover, its long history mirrors the life of Reggio itself—shaped by conquests, altered by earthquakes, and renewed through constant devotion.

Founded during the Byzantine era, the church quickly became the spiritual heart of the Greek community. When the Normans arrived in the 12th century, Count Ruggero safeguarded its autonomy, which allowed the Greek rite to flourish for centuries. However, the devastating earthquake of 1783 forced the community to relocate several times. Despite this, they preserved their identity and, eventually, rebuilt the church in 1876 along the new Strada Aschenez. Designed by engineer A. Pugliese, the new structure adopted a refined neoclassical style with a Latin-cross plan, three naves, and a decorated dome that draws the gaze upward.

The Cattolica dei Greci survived the 1908 earthquake with only minor damage. As a result, it became the city’s only functioning church during those difficult years. Later, restorations in the mid-20th century and again in 2002 strengthened its artistic and architectural heritage. Among its treasured artworks is the 18th-century painting The Sermon of Saint Vincent Ferrer, attributed to Antonino Cilea. Furthermore, the bronze-gilt portal created in 1986 by sculptor Giuseppe Niglia enriches the façade. It features eight biblical panels arranged around a central cross adorned with Greek-rite saints. Above it, a Greek inscription honors the Virgin Mary, linking past and present in a single graceful gesture.
