Symbol of Rebirth in the Heart of Reggio Calabria
Where History Meets Resilience
Located just steps from the bustling Corso Garibaldi, Piazza De Nava is one of Reggio Calabria’s most cherished public spaces. It’s more than a square—it’s a symbol of rebirth. Created in honor of Giuseppe De Nava, the visionary minister who led the city’s reconstruction after the catastrophic 1908 earthquake, this elegant piazza stands as a powerful reminder of determination and identity.
Framed by four historic streets and facing the majestic façade of the National Archaeological Museum, the square is a scenic gateway into the city’s historic heart. Its layout, both geometric and graceful, forms a natural meeting point—uniting the past with the vibrant present of Reggio’s urban life.
At its center rises the Monument to Giuseppe De Nava, a masterpiece by sculptor Francesco Jerace. Unveiled in 1936, the bronze statue stands tall on an ornate pedestal, richly adorned with bas-reliefs depicting scenes of labor. These intricate carvings celebrate the tireless spirit of the people who rebuilt their home. Between the statue and base, two crests—Saint George slaying the dragon and the emblem of Reggio Calabria—highlight the city’s values: courage, perseverance, and pride.
Adding harmony to the neoclassical composition, two shell-shaped fountains flank the monument. Their gentle curves and flowing water soften the monument’s grandeur, creating a place of beauty as well as meaning.
Few know that after the 1908 disaster, some officials wanted to relocate the city entirely. But De Nava stood firm. He insisted on rebuilding Reggio where its soul had always been. Today, Piazza De Nava honors that brave choice.
