Where History Flows: A Symbol of Rebirth and Civic Beauty

Nestled on Corso Vittorio Emanuele III, right across from the historic Miramare Hotel and Palazzo Giuffrè, stands La Luminosa—Reggio Calabria’s most radiant fountain. More than an architectural piece, it serves as a powerful symbol of rebirth, culture, and pride. Designed in 1936 by Camillo Autore, a renowned local architect and engineer, the fountain was initially part of the “Cippo” project. This monument was meant to honor the moment King Vittorio Emanuele III learned he had become king during his visit to Reggio.

Eventually, La Luminosa became an independent masterpiece. It was placed along the botanical strip of the Falcomatà promenade to highlight the city’s beauty. Architecturally, it features a wide semicircular basin that captures the water from two side cascades. A smaller, inner pool collects water from elegant central jets.

At the center rises a tall column with an Ionic capital. Mounted on it is a bronze relief of a torchbearer, or tedoforo, symbolizing light, continuity, and civic spirit. Two marble staircases flank the fountain, linking the seafront with the upper Corso Vittorio Emanuele III. Meanwhile, the surrounding black-and-white mosaic pavement adds a touch of rhythm and harmony with its geometric patterns.

La Luminosa stands out as the only truly monumental fountain in Reggio Calabria. It reflects the artistic legacy of Camillo Autore, who helped shape much of the city’s post-earthquake architecture. His work, especially here, continues to inspire awe and admiration.
