A Temple of Culture and Memory: Discover Reggio Calabria Through Its Historic Library

In the heart of southern Italy, the Municipal Library of Reggio Calabria “Pietro De Nava” stands as a symbol of knowledge and tradition. Founded in 1818 as the Regia Biblioteca Ferdinandiana, it is the oldest library in Calabria. Later, it was renamed in honor of Pietro De Nava, whose brother Giuseppe donated the villa that now serves as the library’s main location.

This historic library is more than a place for books. It is a living museum. Inside, visitors will find rare manuscripts, early printed books (incunabula), 16th-century editions, and an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures. Each room tells a story of Calabria’s artistic and intellectual past.

One of its most moving spaces is the Corrado Alvaro Room. Here, the life of one of Calabria’s greatest writers is brought to life. The room displays his desk, carpets, books, and personal items—all donated by his family.

Corrado Alvaro, born in 1895 in San Luca, captured the soul of his people in works like Gente in Aspromonte. His writing is still studied in local schools. Therefore, many residents see him as the author of their adolescence and shared identity.
