The Monument Celebrating Unity and the Ancient Origins of Rhegion

Located along the waterfront of Parco Lineare Sud, Omonoia is one of the most symbolic monuments in Reggio Calabria. Created by the sculptor Giuseppe Gattuso, the artwork celebrates the ancient Greek roots of the city and the universal value of harmony among peoples.

The monument overlooks the Strait of Messina and stands out against the Mediterranean landscape. Palm trees, sea views, and open skies surround the sculpture, creating a peaceful and evocative atmosphere. As a result, visitors can enjoy both an artistic experience and one of the most scenic areas of the city.

In Ancient Greece, the word Omonoia represented concord, social balance, and unity within the community. During the foundation of ancient Rhegion, this concept became deeply important. Indeed, it symbolized coexistence between Greek settlers and local populations across Magna Graecia. Because of this shared spirit, Rhegion grew into a flourishing cultural and commercial center.

The sculpture reflects these historical values through its elegant column and symbolic decorative elements that climb upward toward the Ionic capital. Moreover, its vertical structure creates a strong visual connection between the ancient world and modern Reggio Calabria. Facing the sea, the monument also recalls the city’s long relationship with Mediterranean civilizations and maritime history.

The project was promoted by the Mediterranean Foundation together with Fidapa Reggio Calabria. Their goal was to highlight the historical identity of the city and honor the origins of ancient Rhegion. Today, Omonoia remains a meaningful cultural landmark for travelers, history lovers, and anyone exploring the beauty of Calabria.
