A seaside pathway where art, movement, and Mediterranean identity merge beneath the light of the Strait of Messina
The Contemporary Coastal Park Celebrating Sport, Urban Art, and the Soul of Reggio Calabria
Stretching south from the historic waterfront of Reggio Calabria, the Parco Lineare Sud is one of the city’s most important urban regeneration projects. It was designed to reconnect people with the sea through nature, culture, and public spaces. Moreover, the park extends the experience of the famous promenade celebrated by Gabriele D’Annunzio as “the most beautiful kilometer in Italy.”
The coastal route runs for nearly four additional kilometers along the Strait of Messina. It stretches between the mouths of the Calopinace and Sant’Agata streams. Along the way, visitors can enjoy panoramic walking paths, cycling lanes, outdoor fitness areas, playgrounds, and relaxing green spaces facing the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, the promenade has become a lively meeting point for residents, athletes, and tourists.
One of the most distinctive elements of the Parco Lineare Sud is its impressive sequence of contemporary murals. These colorful artworks decorate long sections of the waterfront and accompany those who walk, jog, or cycle along the route. In addition, the murals celebrate local identity through symbols connected to Calabria’s culture, architecture, traditions, and famous bergamot. Consequently, the promenade feels like an open-air gallery where movement and storytelling blend together.
The park also includes symbolic places such as the Giardino della Fata Morgana and the traditional Fishermen’s Club. These landmarks preserve the authentic maritime spirit of the city while introducing a modern vision of public life. During the afternoon, sections of the waterfront become a pedestrian sports island dedicated to athletics and outdoor training.
Today, the Parco Lineare Sud represents a renewed connection between Reggio Calabria and its sea, combining mythology, wellness, art, and Mediterranean beauty in one extraordinary coastal landscape.
