The Church of Purification — Where History, Faith, and Community Intertwine

Standing gracefully at the crossroads of Via Aschenez and Via Domenico Romeo, the Parrocchia Santa Maria della Candelora—known to locals simply as La Candelora—is one of the most ancient and beloved churches in Reggio Calabria. Its roots trace back to the 14th century, when several parishes were dedicated to the Virgin Mary, each reflecting the city’s deep Marian devotion. By 1567, the Candelora had already earned its place among the key parishes listed in the Archiepiscopal records.

Over the centuries, noble families such as the Consolino and Filocamo became its patrons, nurturing a flourishing community that grew into one of the most populous in Reggio. Despite its humble size, the church was once the beating heart of the city’s faith, welcoming hundreds of worshippers daily. The devastating earthquake of 1908, however, changed its destiny, forcing parishioners to gather in a makeshift wooden chapel by the Santa Lucia stream—where the steadfast devotion of the people kept hope alive.

In 1946, tragedy struck again when fire consumed the temporary church. Yet from the ashes rose the present-day sanctuary, solemnly consecrated in 1960 by Monsignor Ferro. The spirit of the parish endured, sustained by figures like Saint Gaetano Catanoso, who served as pastor from 1921 to 1940, leaving an indelible mark of compassion and faith.

Today, Santa Maria della Candelora remains more than a place of worship—it is a living testimony to Reggio’s resilience and its eternal light of belief, community, and rebirth.
