Piazza del Popolo in Reggio Calabria with open-air market and historic buildings

Piazza del Popolo Reggio Calabria

In the northern part of Reggio Calabria, between the neighborhoods of Santa Lucia and Tremulini, lies Piazza del Popolo. Trapezoidal in shape, this square has witnessed major social and cultural changes over the last century.

Originally designed under the fascist regime, the square followed the principles of rationalist architecture. Every building and street was meant to reflect political control. The “Casa del Fascio”, once the regime’s headquarters and a sports center, still stands on the southern edge. Today, it serves a new purpose as the seat of the Regional Administrative Court.

Over time, however, the square changed its face. Today, Piazza del Popolo is a lively hub of everyday life. Each morning, it hosts Reggio Calabria’s most important open-air market. Locals gather here to buy fresh produce, household goods, and much more. The atmosphere is warm, bustling, and distinctly southern Italian.

Moreover, the square plays a central role in September’s Marian festivities. During this time, it becomes a stage for live concerts and vibrant celebrations. From authoritarian gatherings to joyful community events, the square tells a story of transformation.

Interestingly, in the early 1930s, Piazza del Popolo hosted Reggio’s first basketball match. It was also used for gymnastic exhibitions and skating competitions, adding a surprising sporting chapter to its past.

Walk through Piazza del Popolo and explore a living monument of Reggio’s evolving soul.
