Piazza Duomo Reggio Calabria

A Square Full of Stories and Symbols

In the vibrant historic center of Reggio Calabria, Piazza Duomo stands as a living symbol of resilience and rebirth. Closely tied to the city’s identity, the square tells a story of centuries marked by cultural pride, spiritual devotion, and political change. Following the catastrophic earthquake of 1908, a major urban reorganization in 1911 repositioned the square slightly to the south. This transformation gave rise to the elegant and symmetrical design visitors admire today.

At the heart of the square, the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta proudly dominates the skyline. While the original cathedral sustained only minor damage in the quake, city planners made the decision to demolish and rebuild it. However, they retained many artistic elements from the original structure, preserving a tangible link between past and present.

Historically, locals knew this space as “Tocco Grande,” a term rooted in the 16th century. It referred to one of the city’s civic zones, or “Tocchi,” where citizens gathered to elect mayors representing both the people and artisan classes. Therefore, Piazza Duomo has long served not only as a spiritual center, but also as a democratic one.

Moreover, on August 21, 1860, the square became the scene of a decisive clash between Garibaldi’s Southern Army and Bourbon troops. That victory sealed Reggio’s fate, bringing it into the fold of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.

Today, Piazza Duomo offers more than echoes of the past. On the northern edge, visitors can admire Palazzo Laface, an Art Nouveau masterpiece. Though usually closed, it opens to the public during FAI Spring Days, unveiling stunning marble interiors and graceful iron staircases. Just steps away, the Diocesan Museum deepens the experience, offering sacred art that reveals the spiritual core of Reggio Calabria.
