A crossroads of cultures in the heart of Reggio Calabria
Discover the multicultural charm of Piazza Sant’Agostino
Piazza Sant’Agostino, officially known as Piazza Carlo Mezzacapo, takes its popular name from the historic Sant’Agostino Church that overlooks it. This vast rectangular square ranks among the largest in Reggio Calabria and reflects the city’s rich diversity and cultural openness. Its official name honors Carlo Mezzacapo, a hero of the Italian Risorgimento, and brother of Luigi Mezzacapo, who gave his name to the nearby former military barracks.
The square lies in the Sant’Agostino district, historically regarded as Reggio’s most multicultural neighborhood. Here, visitors can explore a colorful mosaic of traditions and flavors. Along Via San Francesco da Paola, small ethnic markets, authentic international restaurants, and family-run shops bring global influences into daily life. Therefore, walking through this area feels like embarking on a short journey across continents.
Architecturally, the Romanesque-Byzantine Sant’Agostino Church gives the square its distinctive character. Its domes of varying sizes rise gracefully above the skyline, adding charm and originality compared to other city churches. Meanwhile, Via San Francesco da Paola borders the piazza on the west, Via Fratelli Cairoli defines its southern edge, and the Caserma Mezzacapo on the opposite side reminds visitors of Reggio’s military heritage.
For many years, the square served mainly as a parking area. However, recent restoration projects have completely changed its atmosphere. Today, leafy flowerbeds, Liberty-style street lamps, and open pedestrian spaces make it a welcoming place where locals and travelers can meet, relax, and enjoy Reggio’s multicultural soul.
