Where History, Faith, and Liberty Embrace in the Heart of Reggio Calabria

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Reggio Calabria, the Waldensian Evangelical Church stands as a steadfast symbol of courage and conviction. Its story traces back to the twelfth century, when Valdo of Lyon—a wealthy merchant moved by the Gospel—chose a life of simplicity and devotion. His followers, known as the “Poor of Lyon,” were condemned as heretics and forced into exile. Yet, despite persecution, their message of humility and justice endured.

Over time, the Waldensians found refuge in the alpine valleys of Piedmont. There, their faith deepened, rooted in the authority of Scripture and the belief in the priesthood of all believers. Through centuries of struggle, they carried forward a vision of spiritual equality and moral strength. Eventually, their perseverance was rewarded in 1848, when King Charles Albert of Savoy issued the “Letters Patent,” granting them civil and political rights. Since then, February 17th has been celebrated as “Waldensian Freedom Day”—a reminder that liberty thrives only when it is shared by all.

Today, the Waldensian Evangelical Church of Reggio Calabria continues this remarkable legacy. United with the Methodist Church since 1979, it promotes dialogue, inclusion, and social justice.
