A timeless journey through the soul of Magna Graecia, where ancient voices still echo among sacred artifacts and forgotten stories.
Discovering the Legacy of Ancient Locri Epizephyrii
The National Archaeological Museum of Locri in Reggio Calabria is one of the most important cultural landmarks in southern Italy. Located near the ancient city of Locri Epizephyrii, the museum preserves extraordinary evidence of Magna Graecia civilization. Since its inauguration in 1971 as the “Antiquarium di Locri,” the museum has become a key destination for archaeological tourism in Calabria. In 1998, it officially gained the status of National Museum, confirming the historical importance of the entire archaeological area.
Inside the museum, visitors can explore a remarkable collection of Greek and Roman artifacts. Elegant vases, sacred pinakes, architectural fragments, and everyday objects reveal the sophistication of ancient Locrian society. Moreover, one of the most fascinating sections focuses on the role of women in daily life. Here, a reconstructed loom and domestic tools offer insight into local traditions and craftsmanship.
The museum is organized across two different levels. The upper floor hosts the main exhibition spaces, where artifacts are displayed according to their archaeological origin. Meanwhile, the lower open-air portico contains larger remains, including sarcophagi, funerary stones, and architectural elements. In addition, this area regularly hosts cultural events, conferences, and archaeological presentations.
Beyond the museum itself, the Archaeological Park of Locri expands the visitor experience even further. New excavations uncovered exceptional discoveries from the Roman era, including the famous “Togato di Petrara,” a refined marble statue dating back to the 1st century BC. Furthermore, the restored Casino Macrì now houses important Roman collections inside a historic rural residence built over ancient thermal baths. Together, these spaces create an unforgettable journey through the history, art, and identity of Calabria.
