In the lively Piazza Camagna, along the graceful Corso Garibaldi, the Monument to Biagio Camagna rises with quiet authority. More than just a sculpture, it stands as a living tribute to justice, courage, and the soul of Reggio Calabria. Every detail of the monument reflects the story of a man whose voice once echoed through courtrooms—and whose values still resonate today.

In 1924, local sculptor Domenico Pellegrino crafted this powerful bronze figure. Just a year later, the city proudly unveiled it, capturing Biagio Camagna in a decisive courtroom moment. On June 3, 1919, in Naples, Camagna defended several sailors from Reggio who had been unjustly accused. His passionate speech not only won their freedom but also became a symbol of moral strength.

The statue, positioned atop a double marble base, features an inscription that reads: “A Biagio Camagna: il Popolo”—”To Biagio Camagna: The People.” This phrase highlights the profound connection between the advocate and his fellow citizens.

Over the years, the statue experienced several moves. In 1967, it was relocated to Piazza Castello, near the courthouse. However, many residents never accepted the change. After four decades, and thanks to a campaign led by the cultural group L’Agorà, the statue returned to its original home in 2007. The moment was not only symbolic but also deeply emotional for the entire community.
