Ancient terracotta fragments and ruins at Griso Laboccetta Archaeological Park in Reggio Calabria

Griso Laboccetta Archaeological Park Reggio Calabria

Nestled in the center of Reggio Calabria, the Griso Laboccetta Archaeological Park is a remarkable testament to the city’s ancient Greek heritage. Originally, the sanctuary stretched across the blocks now marked by Tripepi, Aschenez, Palamolla, and XXIV Maggio streets. It is the oldest known place of worship in Reggio and reveals layers of devotion that span centuries. Archaeological evidence dates the sanctuary to the late 7th century BC. However, traces suggest that people may have used this area for rituals even in prehistoric times.

The sanctuary was mainly dedicated to the goddess Demeter and her daughter Kore, also known as Persephone. This sacred site reflects the spiritual and cultural life of the ancient Reggini. Excavations in the mid-19th century uncovered a rich collection of votive offerings, miniature terracotta vessels, and finely crafted figurines representing goddesses, worshippers, and animals. Among these treasures, a polychrome terracotta relief, created around 520 to 500 BC, stands out. It depicts two graceful female figures in motion and remains one of the most celebrated artifacts at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.

The sanctuary likely consisted of several small, interconnected temples. Remnants of low stone and brick walls, along with foundations of sacella from the 6th century BC, still hint at its former structure. Later modifications during the Roman imperial era show the evolution of worship practices and the site’s continued importance. Visiting Griso Laboccetta allows you to walk through centuries of faith and artistry. Every fragment of terracotta and stone foundation tells a story of devotion, community, and the enduring cultural beauty of Reggio Calabria.
