Piazza Sant’Agostino, officially named Piazza Carlo Mezzacapo, is known by locals after the historic Sant’Agostino Church that overlooks it. This large rectangular square is one of the biggest in Reggio Calabria. It stands as a symbol of the city’s diverse community. The square is named after Carlo Mezzacapo, a hero of the Italian Risorgimento. He was the brother of Luigi Mezzacapo, to whom the nearby former military barracks are dedicated.

The square is located in the Sant’Agostino district, which is historically the most multicultural neighborhood in Reggio. Here, visitors will find a rich tapestry of cultures. For example, ethnic mini-markets, authentic international eateries, and vibrant local businesses line Via San Francesco da Paola. These places offer a unique experience for tourists.

Architecturally, the piazza is framed by the beautiful Romanesque-Byzantine Sant’Agostino Church. The church has unusual domes of different sizes, making it stand out from other city churches. On the west side, the piazza borders Via San Francesco da Paola. To the south, it is flanked by Via Fratelli Cairoli. The Caserma Mezzacapo occupies the remaining side, adding historic military significance to the square.

For years, the piazza was used as a parking area. However, recent restoration transformed it into a fully pedestrian-friendly space. Now, it is adorned with leafy flowerbeds and charming Liberty-style street lamps. This makes Piazza Sant’Agostino an inviting destination for visitors eager to explore Reggio’s multicultural spirit.
